Top 3 Road Trip Destinations for A Fun Family Getaway This Summer

Summer break is almost here, and it’s time to start planning how you’ll spend the next couple of months with your family. Now that COVID restrictions have significantly lightened, many families will hop on flights to visit family and get as far out of town as possible. But others are interested in getaways that are a little closer to home.

Families have been packing into cars and hitting the open road for generations. Here in Central Florida, we’re fortunate to be located right in the middle of the action and a day’s drive to any other place in the state. Here’s a list of road trip destinations and a breakdown of what each has to offer that might pique your interest as you plan your summer vacations.

A Trip To The Panhandle

Who doesn’t love a trip to the Florida panhandle? With miles of beautiful Gulf of Mexico beaches, it’s about a 7-hour drive from Central Florida to the farthest western tip of the state. If you choose to land in Pensacola, there will be plenty for you to do and see, but the great thing about a panhandle road trip is access to several other states. You’ll pass southern Georgia and Alabama on your drive, and once you’re in Pensacola, you’re just a short drive from Mobile, AL, and Biloxi, MS. This is an excellent trip for families who want to take it slow and enjoy the drive. You’ll pass through so many unique and beautiful places.

Visit South Florida And The Keys

Are you looking for an entirely different experience? Drive south and see the busy beaches and incredible culture of Miami. South Florida has a rich Cuban culture, making it a hot spot for great food and music. It also has incredible art museums and plenty of natural beauty. Once you’ve spent some time in Miami, keep driving until you make it to Key West, the U.S.’s southernmost point. On a good day, Key West is less than an 8-hour drive from central Florida, though you’ll want to avoid high traffic times like holidays and weekends. You’ll cross 42 bridges and pass 800 individual Keys on the way. Not all of the Florida Keys are as popular to tourists as Key West. You can easily find a quiet rental on a beautiful beach where your family can run and play. Whatever you’re looking for, you can probably find it in South Florida.

Enjoy North Florida And Savannah

We’ve been west, and we’ve been south. Now it’s time to head north. You’ll find the City of St. Augustine and all of its historical charm just an hour from here. Your family could get lost in the Old City, wandering the winding streets, sampling delicious food, and exploring the old fort. Once you’ve toured St. Augustine, keep driving up the coast, and you’ll quickly run into the city of Jacksonville. There is so much to do and see, from museums to zoos and even professional sporting events in Jacksonville, and you’re still just a short trip from home. Plan a night in historic Savannah, Georgia, if you want to go a little farther away. If you’ve never been to Savannah with your family, this is a great opportunity. The city is truly a sight to behold. Walk the tree-covered streets or take a trolley tour of the town. There is so much history to take in. And, if you’re craving fun in the sun, Savannah is about an hour from Hilton Head, one of the most popular beach destinations in the southeast.

When planning a family road trip, the most important element is your time together. No matter where you travel from here, there is plenty of beauty to behold and fun to be had.
