Fine Arts and Educational Success – Why St. Barnabas Prioritizes These Programs

Think about the people in your life who are not only successful but are also kind, compassionate, and involved members of their community. Chances are, those people have something in common: a well-balanced education that stretched beyond the classroom.

Involvement in music, the arts, and other extracurricular activities doesn’t just keep students entertained or busy. It fosters creativity and teaches life skills that will benefit them in high school, college, and beyond.

At St. Barnabas Episcopal School in DeLand, Florida, we are proud to offer opportunities for naturally creative students to hone their passion and skills in the arts. In fact, we believe this to be one of the biggest benefits of a private education. By offering top academic programs alongside robust extracurriculars, we’re able to mold each student into a well-rounded person while also honoring their own individuality.

Fine Arts

From drawing to painting to sculpting, the fine arts allow students to creatively express their thoughts, feelings, and knowledge in ways words can’t always convey. We’ve seen countless student creations that have broadened our perspective and helped us connect with the student as a person. Art helps bring beauty and meaning into life, and we’re proud to offer an environment where children with passion and talent in fine arts can learn from specialized instructors and be celebrated for their unique gifts.

We also incorporate fine arts into our academic programming. Whether we’re discussing the relationship between math and music or learning how artists have shaped history, our students develop an appreciation for art and an understanding of its role in society. Your child may be more of a scientist than a painter, but they’ll still have opportunities to engage with their artistic side. And they’ll graduate with an understanding that the artists’ contributions to society also have incredible value and meaning. This understanding will benefit them when they eventually move into a career and need to collaborate with those in other disciplines.

And what if your child is more of a painter than a scientist? We can’t think of a better place for them to be than St. Barnabas, where one of our key values is Excellence: doing the best we can with the unique gifts and abilities God has given each one of us.

Music & Theater Productions

When was the last time you attended a play that really moved you – or a musical that brought you to tears? We know we have students with the potential to be top musicians, actors, and performers among us at St. Barnabas.

One of the things that sets our music and theater programs apart is that we involve all students. Whether they’re a member of the chorus or the lead character, your child will learn what it’s like to work with a team and create a stunning piece of performance art.

We group students by grade level in our music and theater productions. This ensures each student is given a role that not only suits them but also challenges them to a degree appropriate for their age. We’ve had plenty of students discover their love for acting or singing while on our stage, and then go on to foster this passion either in their career or as a lifelong hobby.

Summer Camps

Another way for your student to diversify their private education is by attending St. Barnabas Summer Camps. We offer our camps for Kindergarten through Grade 8, and we have sessions from June through early August.

Each summer camp is specialized towards a skill or activity. Our Music camp, which is tailored to Grades 3 – 8, is perfect for students who want to explore different instruments and develop their rhythm. We also offer Art Camp, where kids can learn new techniques and create some incredible pieces of their own. Art Camp is actually led by an alumnus who is currently attending college for Art and Design.

Another option for students with a passion for the arts is the Screenwriting & Screen Acting Camp. This one-week session is perfect for students with any level of experience. It’s amazing how students’ acting skills develop over the course of the week. Graphic Design camp is another option. Students not only get to engage their creativity but also learn hands-on skills that are very marketable in today’s world.

Of course, our camps don’t focus only on the arts. We also offer summer camp weeks focusing on Chess, Robotics, Math, Soccer, Basketball, and more. Our popular sports programs, just like our fine arts programs, help develop well-rounded, community-oriented students.
