2nd Grade: Ms. Holt’s Weekly Newsletter

Tutoring: Mondays by appointment 3:15-4:00
Tutoring is intended for the student who needs extra help in a specific skill or a missed concept; it is not intended for the student who needs general ongoing tutoring on a weekly (or more) basis.
Week of May 21st
Dear Parents,
In our next unit, America’s People, students will explore immigration to the United States and some of the many cultures of our country. They will be given facts about people who came from different countries, and they will learn how customs, traditions, and history forge bonds among people. Through their reading, students will have an opportunity to learn about the feelings people have for their homelands and native cultures. They will also start to develop an understanding of how our country grows as people come from all over to begin new lives.
Our final selection is “The Story of the Statue of Liberty.” Students will learn that Lady Liberty stands on an island in New York Harbor welcoming people from around the world. They will also learn that the statue was a gift from the people of France and took five years to complete. This expository text tells of many interesting facts describing the planning, building, and erecting of this historic landmark. You might ask your child to share what they know about the Statue of Liberty.
Our vocabulary for the week will be: harbor, ferry, monuments, symbol, voyage, and independence. Homework will not be given this week.
Our grammar skill this week is a review of sentence composition.
Our word analysis for the week will be a review of past lessons. Homework will not be given this week.
A special thanks goes out to Mrs. Andrea Scott for sharing God’s love with our students every Friday this school year. Our students looked forward to her special preparations and kindness each week. Please be sure to thank her personally.
Fondly,
Ms. Holt
