Many of you know Eric Lee from the Victory Volleyball Camps held this summer. Eric, began playing volleyball at age 14 in a men’s church league, and later advanced to Men’s USVA Open Tournaments. He was trained for coaching from the ages of 15-18 by a local high school coach. For the last 2 years, he played for an intramural team at Stetson University, where he is completing his MBA, before pursuing a law degree to become a Sports Attorney. He received his IMPACT certification from USAV and will continue to receive future certifications.

Eric attended St. Barnabas School (Class of 2004) and graduated from DeLand High School in 2008 with his AA from Daytona State College. He received his Bachelors from Stetson University in Business in December 2010. His passion for the sport and coaching experience will be a strong asset for our girls volleyball program.

Students can improve grades with better study methods and strategies. If your child is struggling at school try the following:

Designate specific areas for homework and studying. Possibilities include the child’s room or the kitchen or dining room table. Eliminate as much distraction as possible.

Organize study and homework projects. Get a large calendar, one that allows space for jotting down things in the daily boxes. Rip it apart so that you (and the child) can sequentially mount the school months for the current semester.

Note-taking is a critical skill and should be developed. Many students don’t know how to take notes in those classes that require them.

During a homework session, watch for signs of frustration. No learning can take place and little can be accomplished if the child is angry or upset over an assignment that is too long or too difficult.

Help your kid to learn the general concepts first, don’t worry about the details until he/she has learned the main ideas.

Allow breaks: Taking a short break might help your child concentrate.

As few as twenty years ago scientists believed that the genes we were born with wholly determined the structure of our brains. The facts recently discovered by neurologists and psychologists, however, prove that how children develop, learn, and grow depends on the critical and continual interplay between nature (or genetic endowment) and nurture (the surroundings, care, stimulation, and teachings received).

OLD THINKING. . .

NEW THINKING. . .

How a brain develops depends on the genes you are born with.

How a brain develops hinges on complex interplay between the genes you’re born with and the experiences you have.

The experiences you have at a very young age have little impact on later development.

Early experiences have a decisive impact on the architecture of the brain and the nature and extent of adult capacities.

A secure relationship with a primary caregiver creates a favorable context for early childhood development and learning.

Early interactions don’t just create a context, they directly affect the way the brain is “wired.”

Brain development is linear: the brain’s capacity to learn and change grows steadily as an infant progresses toward adulthood.

Brain development is non-linear: there are prime times for acquiring different kinds of knowledge and skills.

A toddler’s brain is much less active than the brain of a college student.

By the time children reach the age of three, their brains are twice as active as those of adults. Activity drops during adolescence.
