Pre-K4: Mrs. Baldauff’s Newsletter

Our theme for the week of April 30th will continue to be “Geography – How we fit into our world”. This week we will discuss, “In My Continent” and ”In My World”. We will also be getting ready for Mother’s Day. The letter of the week will be the letter “V”. Please help your child plan Show and Share using our letter of the week.
Mother’s Day Celebration:
Moms please save Thursday, May 10th from 1:30PM – 2:30PM for a special event in
your honor. The children are planning something special for you so mark your calendar with this date. This event is for mother and child only. We are sorry but we cannot accommodate other family members. If for some reason you cannot attend, then you can send one other person (grandmother, aunt or other family member) in your place. Let us know if you have any questions or concerns.
Manatee Adoption:
The children have chosen the manatee that we will adopt for our class. His name is Flash. He is a large male manatee first identified in 1977. He is shy of human contact and will take off in a “flash” when disturbed. I will send the money that the children donated by doing jobs around your homes to the Save The Manatee Club. They will send us a packet of information about our manatee with other information concerning manatees. We will also receive a photograph of our manatee. It will take a couple of weeks for this to arrive. The children are anxious for it to come.
Field Day:
Friday, May 4th is Field Day. It will take place at Valentine Park in Orange City. You may drop off your child between 8:15AM and 8:30AM in our designated area. Come to the second entrance to the park. We will be all the way at the west end. Do not drop off before 8:15AM as there will be no adult available to take your child because we will be setting
up for our activities. We have activities planned for the children during the morning. We will also have lunch at the park.
Please have your child wear comfortable shorts on this day. We will have the children wear their field trip shirts for the day. I am sending them home in your child’s backpack today. They will need to wear sneakers on this day to be able to participate in our activities. We will begin the day with a parade at 8:45AM consisting of various countries around the world. We will participate as the United States. We will provide a snack and drink breaks for the children. Parents and other family members are invited to come and spend the day with us.
Field Day will be over by 11:30AM. All children must be picked up at that time. There will be No After School Care on this day.
There will also be a sign out sheet at the park on the day of this event. Make sure that you see me before you leave so that you can sign your child out. If someone else is picking up
your child, please let them know about our sign out procedure. This will let the teachers know that all the children are safely in the hands of their parent or chaperone.
VPK:
Our VPK program started on Monday, November 7th. There are two forms that need to be signed. One is the VPK attendance policy and the other is a form of eligibility. These forms are required by the Early Learning Coalition of Flagler and Volusia in order for your child to utilize our program. You will need to come by the classroom in the morning or afternoon to sign these forms.
It is also required that your child is signed in and out every day to confirm that your child attended school daily. We do not want to interrupt our traffic pattern in the morning, so we will be asking each parent for two signatures in the afternoon at pick up time. We will hand you a pen and clipboard for you to sign twice while we put your child in the car. Please do not come into the classroom in the morning to sign in.
Another requirement of the ELCFV is a monthly form requiring a signature to confirm that the attendance for each month is correct and to confirm that you will choose St. Barnabas for the next month. I will inform you each month when it is time to sign this form.
Thank you for following the procedures of the ELCFV.
Imagine It! Reading:
The children are learning that words have syllables. They are learning that a syllable is a part of a word. Each word is made up of one or more parts (syllables). We have been working with 2 and 3 syllable words. We began breaking each syllable into sound parts. The children have begun to blend one-syllable words from the onset and rime. An onset is the initial consonant sound of a syllable. For example, the onset of “big” is the sound “b”. A rime is the part of a syllable that contains the vowel and all that follows it. For example, the rime of “big” is the sound of “ig”. Hearing the sounds in syllables and being able to break the syllables into onsets and rimes prepare children for future activities in which they will blend and segment individual parts and words.
Last week we learned a new sight word - I. We will read the Pre-Decodable Book this week. Look for it to come home in this week’s Friday folder.
Go to the Homework link at the top of this page. Here you will find continued information concerning our Imagine It! curriculum. A list of our sight words will be found here so that you can use them for practice at home. Also, you will find helpful links in our resource section at the bottom of this page. I will put links there that will be helpful for the children to use for their learning.
